After devoting almost ten years of effort and facing many failures to painting on glass, I have established my own style and method.
Normally I have painted single pieces, but in order to apply for the Tableware Festival, I worked on a dessert set.
I purchased plain vintage glass tableware through the American auction site eBay. I selected pictures of angels in my collection that I had accumulated for years, and arranged them to give a sense of unity.
Because it was the first set of pieces, I struggled a lot. There were many pieces I threw out.
But in the end, my work won a prize and has been enjoyed by many people.
Bildnis der Fanny Eers
原画 Friedrich wilhelm Von Schadow (1788-1862)
Friedrich Wilhelm Von Schadow (1788-1862)
Bildnis der Fanny Eers
I found out while I was making this that the painter of the original picture was the same artist who painted “Children of An Artist” which I copied to make a porcelain panel painting. He is a German painter, but his elegant French-style design fascinates me.
The portrait of a lady on this glass piece was from a post card I bought at a museum somewhere in France decades ago. I can’t even remember when.
I’ve been thinking of painting her on a glass piece some day, and when I obtained a glass dinner plate, I came across an idea of this lady encircled by beautiful gold decoration.
When you paint porcelain, it is possible to retouch decorative designs as you work. However, in case you paint glass, precise plan is crucial in order to reduce baking process to a minimum.
Acquisition of data, production, and baking are all equally important.
Emile Vernon (1872-1919)
Title: A girl’s portrait on a glass plate
Diameter: 26cm
Original drawing: Emile Vernon (1872-1919)
Title of the original: unknown
Vernon's works are more like illustrations than work of art, however, I think this piece of artistic work is very attractive.
White roses are used as a background of the original painting to set off the girl.
I chose a solid-colored background for better composition in order to use a round plate. However, “marvelous” is the word for his well-calculated composition of this work.
This is my first “portrait painting on a dinner plate.” After continuous process of trials and errors, I finally realized what I had been wanting to do.
Pierre-Joseph Rudoute (1759-1840)
Roses on a crescent dish (1759-1840)
Width 22cm Height 10.5cm
Original: Pierre-Joseph
Redoute
Rearranged portion of his original picture to fit into the shape of the dish.
I don’t have a talent to draw pictures of Redoute’s quality. The only way for me to draw such pictures is to copy originals.
It is a very important work to collect materials you like by using all the ways possible.
I sought beauty in harmony between solidity of radial dish and picture when I made this.
Flowers and butterflies painted on a goblet
Height: 16cm
I’ve always been trying to paint French-style designs on glasses, but this one turned out to be more like an English-style.
There are no borders in the world of art, but I’d like my works of painting on glasses to be filled with the flavor of France, I go to France twice a year and go to art museums in many places, in and around Paris.
However, I am not only fond of the past, but also have been greatly stimulated by new French “aesthetics.”
原画は Franz Xaver Winterhalter,絵のタイトルは ”Alexandra, Princess of Wales” (1864)
Title: A princess’s portrait on a champagne glass
Height: 20cm
Original drawing: Franz Xaver Winterhalter
Title of the original: “Alexandra, Princes of Wales” (1864)
I designed this so the princess looks beautiful through gold glazing when you see it from the front. "Looks beautiful at any angle." This is a pleasure of glass painting.
Angels’ jewelry box
Width: 13cm Length: 8.5cm Height: 9cm
Painted angels on the jewelry box I found at a flea market in Paris.
Carefully removed the glass cover, painted and baked it several times before put it back on. Removed the old and worn-out cloth pasted around the box and painted the box. The pearl on the hook came from an earring.
“Peacock” - Goblet with a cover
Height: 21cm
Original drawing: Lord Leighton, Frederic - British painter/artist (1830-1896)
The title of this piece is “Pavonia,” a Latin word meaning peacock. This piece was originally painted in 1859.
The model for the design on the goblet is holding a large fan made of peacock feathers.
Highly purified gold was used for painting to accommodate model’s black hair.
Special attention was given to the creation of transparency during the painting process.
I rearranged the original composition, but I couldn’t emphasize its depth, but it has turned out well as a piece of glass art work.
One pair of champagne glasses
Height: 19.5cm
These are champagne glasses although they look more like juice glasses.
Purchased 6 glasses at Lafayette in Paris, but only 2 of them turned out the way I wanted.
Title: Angels on a plate
Original drawing: “Naissanced Vaneus” (1836) by Alexandre Cabanel
I drew angels without background.
When you place the plate on a stand, a special effect appears as if angels are floating in the air.
Title: A rose on a fan-shaped glass plate decorated with opals Original drawing: Picture on the cover of a secondhand book
which I bought at a flea market,Marche d’Aligre in Paris.
Carved ivories, turtle shells, and pearl oysters are used to decorate the ends of elegant hand-painted antique French fans and they are my favorite.
I found and acquired a fan-shaped glass plate on the Internet and immediately started painting on it. In order to set off the pink color of roses, I attached some opals along the ends.
Pauline Caoffier (1814-1900)
A madam on a canister
Height: 18cm
Original artist: Pauline Coeffier (1814-1900)
Title of the original: Madam Breidenbach
The original is a full-length portrait. I copied this picture, because I was impressed by the artist’s refined work that reveals the perfect harmony between her and the model.
Through my work of painting on porcelain and glass, I see pictures much deeper now than before and I enjoy going to art museums.
